Bucky'd been fidgety throughout the debriefing with Fury, even if he hadn't moved a muscle as he listened to the mission -- another HYDRA target, smaller, on a remote island in the Pacific. Not the usual setup, which made him uneasy from the get-go. But there was something else, something nagging at him, something in Fury's tone that told him there was more to this mission than he was willing to divulge. It wasn't a surprise. Fury might not be HYDRA, but in some ways his methods were so similar that it felt like being back there anyway. He definitely believed in the need to know principle, and obviously he didn't feel like they needed to know whatever it was he was holding back. His gaze darted to Steve, wondering if he'd picked up on it, too.

But if Steve had, his expression didn't betray his thoughts.

He pressed his lips together as they were dismissed, Fury addressing him as the others agents involved in the mission filtered out of the room. "Barnes. Hang back a minute."

And there it was, he thought, meeting Steve's eyes only briefly before lingering as Fury requested. One the door was shut again, the other man turned to study him.

"You have a different mission while they're disabling all of HYDRA's operating systems and containing the operatives."

Bucky studied him just as intently, his voice flat when he responded. "Who'm I eliminating?"

If Fury was surprised by his response, he gave nothing away. "Your target is Katya Belyakov."

"Who is she?" His voice was wary.

"You sure you wanna know the details, Barnes?" he asked, arching an eyebrow.

"If you're asking me to murder someone, yes," Bucky said, jaw tightening.

Fury regarded him for a long moment. "Essentially, she's the of the most dangerous people in the galaxy. Mind control abilities that she's utilized to force others to commit her dirty work. She's likely being accompanied by a former SHIELD operative who turned out to be moonlighting for HYDRA, Grant Ward. I'd prefer him to remain alive. He's got a lot to answer for."

Every muscle in Bucky's body tensed at the information about Belyakov, but also the name Grant Ward, his stomach turning in recognition.

"Ah. See you're familiar with him then."

"Unfortunately," Bucky responded stiffly, struggling to maintain his composure. "I'm assuming this isn't an optional mission." There was a hint of bitterness in his voice.

"You knew when you signed the dotted line that there's no such thing here, Barnes. Is there a problem? Or do I need to go over the fine print of your contract to refresh your memory?"

Fuck you, he thought. "No, Sir. Am I free to go?"

"You're dismissed."

--

An hour later, he was suited up in his tac gear, breathing steady and even despite the wild pounding of his heart as he boarded the quinjet with a team he didn't know or trust, and the only person on the earth he truly did.

Steve genuinely felt a little lightheaded at that reaction—the groan, so quiet, Bucky’s eyes visibly dilating, the way he said Steve’s name. It made Steve ever so slightly daring. He took a handful of Bucky’s hair—not to grab or pull, but to let the soft strands run through his fingers, giving just the barest tug.

“Yeah?” Steve asked, so low. “You like this, sweetheart?”

The first reaction Steve had was his gut going tight and hot, an instantaneous liquid burst right over his groin. Then, immediate following that, he went cold.

He let go of Bucky’s hair. Not running away, not trying to make a huge deal of it, but sure that this was something he couldn’t let go unremarked on. Bucky was clearly into it—but he hadn’t expected a title. And with Bucky’s backstory, there was something nauseating about the unexpected Sir.

“Why’d you call me that, sweetheart?” he asked, voice gentle, no longer touching him. He hoped the answer was straightforward, that Bucky wanted to—he’ll see.

Steve went a little queasier.

“I’m just Steve, honey. When we’re doing this. I don’t outrank you,” he said, his voice still gentle.

Steve hated that muttered little apology. He took a step right back up to Bucky, going back to stroking his hair—not quite tugging, not yet, but standing close enough that Bucky’s cheek was only inches away from his sweatpants.

“Hey, no. No need to apologize. I just wanted to ask why, sweetheart. If it was because you were feeling good, because you were in the moment—that’s good. I like that. I like that you were in the moment, god, you’re beautiful.”

And maybe later, when Bucky is less vulnerable, Steve can ask him more about it.

Steve felt a strange sort of awe, when Bucky rested his face against Steve’s thigh. He was so sweet and gentle, so obviously soothed by the position. It was a little like a mountain lion emerged from the woods and crawled in his lap to start purring.

It was a good thing Bucky was on top of things, because Steve was too wrapped up in what was happening between them to even notice the knock. Steve gaped like a fish out of water at the nurse for a long moment, his own cheeks warming, before he finally replied.

“Yes,” he said, vaguely. He fumbled the shirt over his shoulders, hissing a little at how he put pressure on the cast to get it through the sleeve. “I can do that. Just tell me the time. We have to go now, though. It’s important.”

Steve tried to project as much American Hero energy as he could and as little sense of very recently having his boyfriend on his knees as he could manage.

Steve could probably sign for himself. He was basically ambidextrous. Still, he liked the idea of Bucky being able to sign for him.

Smiling at Bucky, a little crooked, he said, “Bucky can do it. He’s gonna take good care of me.”

Steve probably ended up putting more innuendo into that than he fully intended, but he was still pretty overwhelmed by being dressed by Bucky, some of the same shivers of pleasure in his careful buttoning of Steve’s shirt.

Once they were done, Steve fussed with his phone long enough to call an uber.

"C'mon," he said, leaving the room and giving Bucky a cue to follow by tugging on his shirt. Steve didn't talk, not in front of these people (a lot of whom who were unsubtly taking cell-phone pics, even though it was ass-o-clock in the morning at a hospital. People had no shame.) He did keep casting long, lingering looks at Bucky, considering.

He was thinking about a lot of things--playing over that moment of "sir" in his mind was one of them, but it wasn't the only one. It was twisted up with how beautiful Bucky had been, resting his head on Steve's thigh.

When the uber arrived, Steve opened the car door for Bucky, before circling around the other side to get in himself.

He could sense Bucky's ever-increasing nerves and worried about it. HE hoped Bucky wasn't regretting the choices he'd made. In the uber, Steve was grateful he went to the side of the car he did, because he could reach out and take Bucky's flesh hand in his own, gently run his thumb against his skin.

They didn't talk much. Steve was well-aware of the driver.

He did sigh happily, though, as they pulled up to their apartment building and send Bucky a smile. "It's good to be back."

Steve let Bucky unlock the door to their apartment, not wanting to fuss with it one handed. He gave Bucky a long, considering look—realizing, of course, that he was still in his uniform pants.

"I’ll make us some breakfast if you want to get a shower?" Steve said, gently.

Bucky's proposal at first made Steve frown, but then he thought about it -- it would be nice to get into his own bed. And he wasn't really sure how he could manage to cook much with one hand.

He sighed and shook his head. "I hate being hurt. But you're right. I'll go lay down. Make sure you don't leave me alone too, long."

His voice was a little more light and teasing toward the end there. He didn't want to sulk too much and make Bucky feel bad.

Steve hummed a little, thinking about it. "What do you feel like?" he asked, finally. He recalled that Bucky had barely eaten anything at all, last night.

Once they got to the bedroom, Steve reached for his own buttons with his good hand, kicking off the slip-on shoes he was wearing. After undoing the first one, though, he paused and smiled at Bucky, letting his hand fall away.

"Can you help me get my shirt off, sweetheart?"

Steve's heart rate kicked up as well, when Bucky immediately followed his instructions. He gently skimmed his good hand down Bucky's waist, settling it on his hip, as Bucky carefully undid his buttons.

He had been being so careful not to flirt too hard, push too much. He hadn't wanted to make Bucky uncomfortable. But every request he made, Bucky responded, so sweetly and eagerly.

Well. He hoped it was eagerness.

At the thought, he decided to ask, keeping the tone of his voice flirtatious and low. "Do you like when I ask you to do things for me, Bucky? You're very good at it."
